Honduras 2011

Written by

The 2011 Antioch Team to Honduras included 2 full families, and a few others who related. It became a very fun mission trip to help the poorest of the poor with their dental needs in Honduras.  We loved serving the 80 or so kids and staff at the Children’s Village for the 5th year in a row – kids that have been rescued and are growing physically, mentally and spiritually!

Each day was an adventure as we packed up our dental equipment and moved to another site.  We set up clinics in 3 classrooms in the public school and treated 75 people.  It was 100 degrees and 100% humidity - they had fans but guess what?  They didn’t work!

Next, we set up our dental clinic at a school in a tiny village at the border of Guatemala. It had rained heavily, so after we got through packing our equipment through the mud and setting up, we treated about 100 people that day.  A  medical team joined up with us and were able to see all the sick people.

One of the highlights for me was walking over to a small hut and as they invited me inside they gave me the only plastic white chair they possessed.  The mother usually was sitting in that chair, which was the place of honor.  There were about 5 women inside – young mothers with 5 or so children,in the middle of this tiny mud-floored room there was a hammock made of netting with a baby sleeping inside.  There was a dog, a chicken and not sure what else running by me.  After my eyes adjusted to the dark, I noticed way up in the corner of the room a small TV! Wow!  They were kind and loving to me – giving me hugs as I said goodbye.  I’ll never forget their faces and how thankful they were that we had come to help them.

If you get a chance to go on one of these trips, do it!  It is a life-changing experience!

Honduras - 2010

Braving the 100 plus degree temperatures, with 100 per cent humidity, the 2010 Honduras Team "kept on keeping on." They ministered to the needs of over 800 patients, whether doing full mouth care and cleanings (in the children's village), or emergent care in the nearby villages.

Our thanks to a dedicated group of talented, hard-working people who sacrificed their time, money, vacation time, and energy to make this such a successful mission!

Honduras - August 2009

When we took off from Seattle on Aug 14th, only 3 of us knew each other – but when we came back home a week later, all 10 of us were friends for life!!

Our team included two dentists, an oral surgeon, a lab technician, and two dental assistants, along with five lay people to assist and sterilize. Four of us spoke pretty good Spanish, and others learned a few words while there. It was hard work and the weather threatened to kill us with 100% humidity, but we persevered
