What is MRI?

Our Vision
Medical Relief International exists to provide dental, medical and humanitarian aid, or other services deemed necessary for the benefit of all people in need, and to network with other agencies to help them fulfill this vision.

Our History
Although Medical Relief International was founded in 2005, the ministry really began over 20 years ago with a small group of dentists who responded to an invitation from a mission organization in Haiti to provide medical/dental care.  MRI now serves the medical/dental needs in Haiti, Central America, Africa, the Philippines, and is open to serving in any other country where there is a like-minded organized mission who requests our service.

Our Future
MRI is expanding our horizons, perfecting a transferable and sustainable model of our holistic approach that will transfer to locations all over the world. This will be accomplished by networking with other organizations and will continue to bring our expertise together in one common cause.

Our Distinctives
What separates MRI from other humanitarian organizations?  What makes us so special?  We don't answer every call for help, but we work with established  organizations who are currently ministering to populations in need.  We empower  missionaries who are in the daily grind, enabling them to reach more people with their message of hope.  We also realize that the future of MRI rests in the hands of the next generations. Therefore we invest in students to carry on the work, as well as leading short-term teams to various locations around the world.

Over the years, we have discovered that we can ensure the greatest lasting effect in these regions when we invest in leadership. Solomon said in Proverbs 13:12 that when there is no Hope your heart is sick.  Our mission at MRI is to lift others up by bringing them Hope. MRI is investing in  bright, motivated and skilled young international students who will be the future core of MRI International Teams within the next 4 years.

This gift of professional education would have been an utter impossibility for these students without the scholarship financial support offered by MRI.  During their educational phase, our team will provide in-country support to MRI missions in their country and after graduation will also provide professional expertise in future MRI centers for health care.

What is the goal of the International Team?

The goal of the MRI International Team is to develop ripple effects of Hope.  When we invest in people through education and career possibilities, we develop local leadership.  Equipped with skills and leadership, we leave these individuals with tremendous HOPE; helping their families, their communities and eventually their nations.

How is the International Team chosen?

There is no application process.  International Team members did not actively seek their positions.  These are people who learned of MRI in their towns and villages, and generously donated both time and talent volunteering with us.  While we have many fantastic volunteers, these individuals stand out as particularly bright, motivate and skilled.  Working and living side by side for several weeks under sometimes-stressful situations has proven to be an effective interview process.

Who are the students?

ashleyweb
Ashley Lucas -Maswa, Tanzania.  Dental Student as of November 2011
Ashley is a go-getter and serves as our negotiator whenever we travel to Africa.  Ashley comes from a small town in north central Tanzania and SO appreciates the opportunity to go to school and be a part of the MRI family.  Her nickname at school is DOC because she has had a number of years of practical experience with MRI in the field.  She studies hard and loves to learn about dentistry and, by the way, also designs clothes.

mj
Mary Jane Vinluan - Bagio City, Philippines.  Dental Student, who just completed her first semester at the TOP of her class!
She is a very petite (we call her peanut) young girl with a HUGE heart for helping her people with their dental needs.  she lives in a small room, in a small house with her mother.  Not only was she elected the president of her dental class, she is also at the top of her class in academics.  She has tons of energy and really appreciates the opportunity for learning that MRI has given her.

dunstan web
Dunstan Masolele - Mwanza, Tanzania.
Dental Laboratory Technician, and Pastor who has established
an orphanage and outreach for  children in Mwanza, Tanzania who have lost their parents due to HIV/AIDS.
He is furthering his training in Family Ministry, to better prepare himself to run the orphanage.
Dunstan is our oldest student with 4 children.  We met Dunstan the first time when a number of years ago he began to volunteer in our clinics.  Dunstan has an engineering degree from the Ukraine and is great with details.  We will be looking into Dental Tec School for Dunstan so he can become qualified to make partials and dentures for the people coming to our future clinic.
