What is MRI?

Our Vision
Medical Relief International exists to provide dental, medical and humanitarian aid, or other services deemed necessary for the benefit of all people in need, and to network with other agencies to help them fulfill this vision.

Our History
Although Medical Relief International was founded in 2005, the ministry really began over 20 years ago with a small group of dentists who responded to an invitation from a mission organization in Haiti to provide medical/dental care.  MRI now serves the medical/dental needs in Haiti, Central America, Africa, the Philippines, and is open to serving in any other country where there is a like-minded organized mission who requests our service.

Our Future
MRI is expanding our horizons, perfecting a transferable and sustainable model of our holistic approach that will transfer to locations all over the world. This will be accomplished by networking with other organizations and will continue to bring our expertise together in one common cause.

Our Distinctives
What separates MRI from other humanitarian organizations?  What makes us so special?  We don't answer every call for help, but we work with established  organizations who are currently ministering to populations in need.  We empower  missionaries who are in the daily grind, enabling them to reach more people with their message of hope.  We also realize that the future of MRI rests in the hands of the next generations. Therefore we invest in students to carry on the work, as well as leading short-term teams to various locations around the world.

Honduras 2010

honduras 2010 team
Braving the 100 plus degree temperatures, with 100 per cent humidity, the 2010 Honduras Team "kept on keeping on."  They ministered to the needs of over 800 patients, whether doing full mouth care and cleanings (in the children's village), or emergent care in the nearby villages.

Our thanks to a dedicated group of talented, hard-working people who sacrificed their time, money, vacation time, and energy to make this such a successful mission!

Honduras - August 2009

hondurasWhen we took off from Seattle on Aug 14th, only 3 of us knew each other – but when we came back home a week later, all 10 of us were friends for life!!

Our team included two dentists, an oral surgeon, a lab technician, and two dental assistants, along with five lay people to assist and sterilize. Four of us spoke pretty good Spanish, and others learned a few words while there.  It was hard work and the weather threatened to kill us with 100% humidity, but we persevered.

We served 67 of the Children’s Village under WorldWide Heart 2 Heart Ministries.   We were able to clean, seal, and fill all the kids' teeth, and several of the children even got perfect check ups!  This is our third year helping these children both with their medical and dental needs, so most are used to us by now.  It was very rewarding to know that they take good care of the teeth between our yearly visits!

We then opened the clinic up to the little town of Tagucigalpita and served 100 children and adults with various dental and medical problems.

The poverty is stifling and as we toured the local hospital we realized what a horrible situation the country of Honduras is in.  Corruption continues and the money needed to help their own people usually  does not make it to the recipients.

We were told that Americans are no longer coming as often to help them, most likely due to our economic situation.  They begged us to come back – they cannot make it without our help.
Many had suffered pain in their mouths for quite a while, and our visit was a welcomed relief.
