Orphans and Widows

ladieswithhammersweb.jpg In 2011, the medical team to Tanzania had the tremendous opportunity of ministering to the dental and medical needs to a community of orphans and widows.  While there, our team was motivated to help in other areas as well.  Widows were crushing rocks by hand, and the orphans were unschooled.

Immediately plans were set in place to meet these needs, and programs were established for the Orphan Scholarship Program and the Widows Sustainable Business Program.  MRI provides active mentorship along side local leaders to empower the most disadvantaged poor in creating:

  • Networks to promote preventative medical and dental health care
  • Sustainable economic opportunity for families
  • Educational outreach to orphaned children to maintain pace with their peers.

In one year since inception, the MRI Orphan and Widow Programs have been able to provide a 15 percent increase in household economics as measured by small business incomes and ability to initiate savings.  Scholastic tests for 50 percent of orphans demonstrate marked improvement in English and Science.  General health and hope has improved for both widows and orphans following classes in hygiene and nutrition with our local MRI International Team Nutritionist.  Community MRI International Team Representatives are poised to initiate preventative oral hygiene and fluoridation programs in community schools and in churches.  They will team with widows in this project to create for the women additional leadership and business opportunity.

Challenges are deep. For most, the status of orphan or widow had been achieved by HIV/AIDS, malaria, trauma or desertion. They are struggling to survive, in lack of adequate shelter, food, medical care, education, and clothing. We are working together.  Things are beginning to improve, and they have that wonderful powerful word, “hope."

They are excited.
They are very proud.
Life is still hard.
There is more to do.
They need your help.

Widows Sustainable Business Program

Physical exams of the Tanzanian widows demonstrated medical issues- severe dehydration, malnutrition, aching shoulders, knees, backs, forearms, hands, congestion, cuts, scratched eyes, tremendous stress - the result of long days in the available work of “Rock Crashing”.  Days filled breaking boulders into tiny bits by hand for use in construction, earning 2500TSh or  $1.50 per day to care for their families.

Sustainable, less physical, more profitable business opportunities in baking, crafts, and sales of vegetables, fruits, and fish are under way. Widows are positioned in small groups which meet regularly for business lessons with MRI Tanzanian Representatives who track progress and profits.
  • The business groups provide a buffer for times of illness, and have started savings accounts for use in medical emergency and special needs.
  • The new business opportunity of baking is providing jobs and learning through lessons from our MRI Nutritionist for more nutritious recipes and marketing ideas. We are in the process of constructing earth and solar ovens to augment open fire cooking and reduce fuel consumption.
  • Women who sell fish, vegetables, fruits and quality hand made crafts are working together for better for purchasing power.
  • For those who wish to continue “rock crashing”, sledgehammers, hammers, facemasks and safety glasses have been purchased with MRI stimulus money.  This has boosted production, profit and safety.

Mwanza Orphan Scholar Program

The 200 orphans in Mwanza, Tanzania are educationally delayed due to poverty related illnesses and the inability to attend state schools. (School is “free”, but students must pay for desk, paper, teacher, etc). Your MRI donation provides schooling and a Learning Library with books for teaching a variety of subjects to orphans of all ages, and advanced texts, which would otherwise be unavailable. Our MRI Tanzanian Representatives provide and organize tutoring by local high school and college graduates who are compensated by access to the Learning Library. The Library has become a hub for lessons, after school tutoring, and a place for the teens to come to join in discussions.
